    Hij kreeg zijn muziekopleiding van zijn vader en aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium en speelde enige tijd als cellist in het Concertgebouworkest, vanwaar hij werd aangetrokken door Fritz Scheel van het in 1900 opgerichte Philadelphia Orchestra. Vertrok op 1 februari 1897 naar Haarlem. Emigreerde op de dag van zijn huwelijk naar de V.S. Als passagier van de Potsdam (H.A.L.) arriveerde hij op 1 september 1903 in New York. Om voet aan de grond te krijgen verwierf hij in Philadelphia een kleine muziekschool (die gesticht was in 1877). Hij was ook pianist. De muziekschool groeide uit tot het Philadelphia Conservatory of Music. Dat fuseerde in 1962 met de Philadelphia Musical Academy (gesticht in 1870) tot de Philadelphia Academy of Music. Weer later ging die op in de University of Arts. Freek Derks en Alvy logeerden een week bij hun in 1968.
    In 1928 woonden Dirk en zijn gezin 501 South 44th Street, Philadelphia. In 1968 in de South 20th Street.
    Er is een grote familiefoto van een reünie in Nijmegen in 1925. (Familie-album Freek Derks en erven). Hij stierf op 6 januari 1928 door een verkeersongeluk, dat op 21 november 1927 plaatsvond. Zijn vrouw Fie en zoon Willem (genoemd Dick), later Minie en Allison Drake zetten het conservatorium voort.
    Zijn oom Willem Ezerman (1849-1925), organist van de St. Bavo in Haarlem, was ook met een Stolp getrouwd, Aleida, ofwel tante Leida. Zij was een tante van Margrietha (nicht Fie, voor de familie Bakker-Ezerman tante Fie). Dus in feite was Dirks vrouw ook zijn nicht.
    Dirk Hendrik en zijn vrouw hadden bij de volkstelling van 1910 een dienstmeid uit Virginia: May Feagans (een blanke vrouw, geboren 1885). (De V.S. kennen geen Burgerlijke Stand; er worden regelmatig volkstellingen gehouden. In 1910 was de 13e.)
    Dirk en Fie zouden geen twee maar drie kinderen gehad hebben. Opmerkelijk is dat Dirk Hendrik voorkomt op de "Lijst met emigranten", die tussen 1820 en 1957 op Ellis Island zijn aangekomen. Maar dan niet in 1903 maar in 1905 ! Hij is op 20-09-1905 met de ss. Rotterdam vertrokken en op 02-10-1905 aangekomen in New-York. Hij is vergezeld van Margrietha Sophia .... en van een kind van 8 maanden !! En op de lijst is aangetekend "Going Home". Dat laat 2 conclusies toe. 1.- Hij is met zijn vrouw kort na zijn emigratie terug geweest in Nederland. Waarom ? 2.- Zij hebben begin 1905 een kind gekregen. Daarvan is verder niets meer vernomen. In november 1906 wordt Minie geboren.
