Toen Roelof 2 was, verliet Bartje met Roelof Smilde en trok in bij haar zuster in Donkerbroek.
Na de scheiding werd Roelof aan de vader toegewezen, waardoor hij terug kwam in Smilde. Volgens de familieverhalen was Roelof ontvoerd door zijn vader.
Zoon Roelof heeft zijn moeder daarna nog een keer bezocht. Toen Roelof 18 jaar werd kocht hij een fiets en daarmee reed hij van Smilde naar Donkerbroek om haar te bezoeken. Drie jaar later overleed Bartje, naar men zegt van verdriet. Zij was een rijke boerendochter en Roelof was haar enige erfgenaam. Van de erfenis kocht hij later het huis aan de Drentse Hoofdvaart, waar hij zijn hele leven gewoond heeft.
