de geschiedenis leert ons dat Michiel de naam de Ruijter pas in april 1637 is gaan gebruiken. De schrijfwijze verschilde nogal eens. Eveneens leert de geschiedenis ons dat hij de naam de Ruijter/ruyter/ruiter gekozen heeft om zijn oom te eren die een boederij in de buurt bij bergen op zoom had. 

dat wil dus zeggen dat Michiels vader en moeder, broers en zussen door velen als de Ruyter benoemd zijn wat dus feitelijk fout is

Verder is er nog Lucretia door velen genoemd als een dochter van Michiel maar met een geboorte datum 5 jaar voor de geboorte vvan Michiel is dat onmogelijk.
