Notes about Otto I van Luneburg

erft door de vroege dood van zijn vader reeds op jonge leeftijd Lüneburg 1213 en wordt daarom bijgenaamd "het Kind"; verkrijgt daarnaast het aan hem in 1223 overgedragen erfdeel van zijn oom paltsgraaf Heinrich (overleden 1227) en weet deze landen te behouden, ook wanneer hij (samen met zijn oom koning Wlademar II van Denemarken) verslagen wordt bij Bornhöved 1227 en vervolgens twee jaar in gevangenschap in Schwerin verblijft; draagt de Welfische allodia als rijksleen op aan keizer Frederik II en ontvangt ze als hertogdom Brunswijk-Luneburg terug, onder gelijktijdige verheffing tot rijksvorst (Mainz 1235) waarmee de strijd tussen Staufen en Welfen tot een einde komt; voert in het algemeen een vreedzame politiek, waarbij hij de voornaamste plaatsen in zijn gebied stadsrecht en andere privileges geeft en hij zijn territoir, door aankoop of verwerving als leen, verder afrond; ondersteunt de Duitse Orde aan het Frische Haff 1239/1240 en Willem II van Holland als Duits koning in 1251/1252 (die dan zijn schoonzoon wordt)
