Toen in 1187 de betrekkingen tussen Denemarken en het Duitse Rijk op een dieptepunt waren aangeland, stuurde Frederik Barbarossa een dochtertje van Sofia (dat in 1181 aan zijn zoon Philips van Zwaben was uitgehuwelijkt) terug en verstootte Lodewijk de moeder; moeder en dochter keerden daarop, diep verbitterd, naar Denemarken terug. (Zij was later gehuwd met Lodewijk III van Thüringen)
