Om onverklaarbare redenen werd Martin thuis altijd Katrinus genoemd en ook als zodanig aangesproken. Eerst toen hij trouwde werd hij bij zijn echte naam genoemd. Hoewel hij ongetwijfeld gedoopt is, is hij in het doopboek van Nieuw Dordrecht nergens te vinden. Waarschijnlijk is men vergeten hem daar in te schrijven. Hij stond wel in de ledenadministratie van de hervormde kerk in Enschede.
Martin heeft totdat hij in militaire dienst ging nooit warm gegeten. Als de hele familie met een bord eten voor zich zat, had Martin een boterham zonder boter of beleg en een kopje water. Niettemin bleef hij wel zo gezond dat hij wekelijks voetbalde bij de cvv “Sparta” en werd goedgekeurd voor de militaire dienst
