Toen hij eenmaal zijn rijbewijzen had gehaald, werd hij vrachtwagenchauffeur bij Busschers (“de piepert”) en daarna bij groentehandel Fake van de Pol waar hij groenten van de veiling uit het Westland naar Duitsland vervoerde. Vervolgens kwam hij in dienst bij het internationale transportbedrijf van Nellen en Quack in Gronau, Duitsland. Hiervoor reed hij door vrijwel heel Europa. Toen hij het lange reizen en de vele uren zat was werd hij in Enschede buschauffeur bij de T.E.T. In 1980 maakte hij met zijn vrouw hun grote droom waar: een eigen boerderij in Canada. Om het land binnen te komen had hij een werkgever nodig. Die vond hij een jaar eerder toen ze daar met vakantie waren bij een graszodenbedrijf. Ze kochten een boerderijtje in Libau van de opbrengst van hun huis aan de Boddenkampstraat. Om aan geld en voer voor hun varkens te komen ging Jan houthakken in het wilde noorden van Canada, waar alleen wolven en indianen waren. Met kleine vliegtuigjes werden de houthakkers heen en terug gebracht. Hij woonde daar met zijn collega houthakkers de hele winter in houten barakken en kwam slechts af en toe thuis. Al vrij snel wisten ze vooruit te boeren en kochten een grotere boerderij bij Selkirk. Toen Dinie last van reuma kreeg verkochten ze de boerderij en keerden ze in 1997 terug naar Enschede. Daar heeft Jan nooit meer gewerkt, want hij kreeg al gauw gezondheidsproblemen: eerst met de schildklier en toen longkanker, waar hij nog zes jaar mee geleefd heeft tot verwondering van iedereen en in het bijzonder de doktoren die hem nog maar drie maanden gegeven hadden.
