Johannes wordt geboren op 8 februari 1916 in Tilburg. Hij tekent voor militaire dienst bij het KNIL en vertrekt naar Nederlands-Indië.
Op 8 december 1941, een dag na de aanval op Pearl Harbor, verklaart de Nederlandse regering vanuit Londen Japan de oorlog. De Japanners grijpen dit aan om Nederlands-Indië direct binnen te vallen. Een verrassing is dit niet. Vanwege zijn natuurlijke oliebronnen en geostrategische ligging hebben de Japanners de Nederlandse kolonie al langer op het oog als een van de belangrijkste doelen om Oost-Azië te overheersen. Tegen deze achtergrond wordt Johannes als sergeant der infanterie ingezet voor de verdediging van de kolonie.
Na een veldtocht van drie maanden hebben de Japanners de belangrijkste strategische punten in de archipel ingenomen. Het slecht voorbereide KNIL, ernstig gehinderd door besluiteloosheid aan de top, maakt geen schijn van kans en capituleert op 8 maart 1942 in Bandoeng. Johannes wordt rond deze tijd gevangen genomen en samen met duizenden andere Nederlandse militairen afgevoerd. Hij komt terecht in een van de Japanse kampen van Makassar op Celebes.
De ontberingen van krijgsgevangenschap worden Johannes uiteindelijk te veel. Hij bezwijkt op 13 januari 1945 in Makassar aan de gevolgen van uitputting, mishandeling en verwaarlozing. Johannes is 28 jaar geworden en vindt zijn laatste rustplaats op het Nederlands ereveld Candi in Semarang.
