BIOGRAPHY: (A.Maris, De Kerf, Land van Waas, in Vlaamse Stam 1977, blz.418):
Gillis was landbouwer en woonde te Rupelmonde, zeer waarschijnlijk op het Poortgoed, vermits hij op Bazel een drietal akkers pachtte in de Robrecht en in Themerijck (26). Zijn kinderen werden evenwel te Bazel gedoopt; kerkelijk behoorde het Poortgoed tot de parochie van Bazel. In 1720 erfden de kinderen van hun moederlijke grootouders Mathijs de Roeck en Joanna Brouwers: land met huis op de Oeverkouter en nog vijf akkers, alles samen geschat op een waarde van 3.983 gulden (R.A.B., Bazel nr. 218 f 36).

Gillis ging na zijn tweede huwelijk inwonen op de hofstede van zijn tweede vrouw, Amelberga de Rijcke: in nr. 99 van de Robrecht, d.i. aan de noordkant van de Kraakstraat, tussen Portugezenstraat en Langestraat. De laatste jaren van zijn leven had Gillis daar een landbouwbedrijf van ruim 42 gemeten, waarvan 17 gemeten eigen land (R.A.B., Bazel nr. 397 f 88). Van 1735 tot 1738 was Gillis schepen van Bazel. Met zijn eerste vrouw was Gillis bloedverwant in de 3e graad; met zijn tweede vrouw in 3e en 4e graad.
