Ze verbleef van 1903 tot 1911 met man en zoon in Algerije. Hij werkte als mijningenieur in Oran. Ze kon er echter niet aarden en het gezin keerde in 1911 terug naar België, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. Haar man kon niet meer aarden in België en is alleen terug naar Algerije gegaan, waar hij rond 1938 stierf. Ze zijn gescheiden in 1913.
Marie Henriette huwde circa 1914 met Hector Amerlinck, die haar zoon de kans gaf om te studeren.
