He was the son of Gerard I van Gelre (Gerard IV van Wassenberg). When his father died in 1129 he followed it as Count of Gelre and Count of Wassenberg. He married Ermgard van Zutphen, the inheritance daughter of the county of Zutphen, whose possessions consisted of an area east of the IJssel (Zutphen) and numerous outposts in Friesland, Westphalia and the Rhine. Gerard maintained this legacy against the bishop of Münster, supported by the Duke of Lower Lorraine. Gerard was father of: Adelheid. She married Count Egbert of Tecklenburg Hendrik (-1182) a daughter. She married Count Hendrik I of Oldenburg-Wildeshausen (-1162). Gerard of Oldenburg-Wildeshausen (-13 August 1219), from 1191/92 to 1216 Bishop of Osnabrück and from 1210 to 1219 Archbishop of Hamburg and Bremen Christiane of Oldenburg. She married Wedekind von Stumpenhausen Beatrix (- ca. 1224), from 1207 to 1224 abdes in Bassum Hendrik II (-1197). In 1162 he picked up his father as a Count in Wildeshausen. He married Beatrix van Hallermund. She was a daughter of Wilbrand I of Loccum-Hallermund. Wilbrand of Oldenburg (before 1180 - Zwolle, July 26, 1233) was Bishop of Paderborn and of Utrecht Otto I of Oldenburg (-1217) He is buried in the church of Wassenberg.
