Jan Dol aan 't Zuiderdiep werd ingeschreven in het Koopmans & Kramersgilde van Groningen op 9 juni 1770. Vele jaren daarvoor al (op 22 juli 1755) had hij de diaconieleges al betaald voor het kleine burgerrecht. Het kleine burgerrecht was vereist voor het uitoefenen van koophandel, ambachten en neringen.
