Notes about Syttie Douwes

In 1551 waren de Heren Pieter van Dekema, Jan van Cuyck, Floris Foeyt en Crack in ' t Heerenveen begonnen met bet afsteken van veen, en lieten voor het vervoer hiervan de compagnonsvaart graven. Syttie Douwes is omstr. 35 jaar als hij als een der eerste verveners met de Heren van Dekema en van Cuyck in relatie treedt. Hij koopt van hen en anderen met zijn vrouw Tyes vele stukken "hoochveen". De Schoterlandsche compagnonsvaart met de vele zijkanalen, de wijken zijn nog steeds aanwezig. De grootste wijk was de zestien roeden wijk, zo genoemd naar haar breedte.
