Hij was boerenknecht. Hij zat van 8 mei 1888 tot 8 mei 1893 in dienst, ingeloot met lotnummer 47. Op de foto is Jan Aukes 90 en Baukje 86. Tot 1963 hebben ze in het witte huisje in Garijp gewoond. Op 29-6-1916 schrijft hij zich in bij het register voor hondenkarren. Hij heeft volgnummer 341. Zijn adres is dan Garijp 356.

Op 14-10-1927 wordt hij benoemd tot onbezoldigd rijksveldwachter; hij is dan hulpmachinist/ sluiswachter bij waterschap Bernewoude.

Gezinskaart Bergum: Jan Aukes is veehouder en het gezin is Nederlands Hervormd. Folkert is hier veldarbeider. Op 13-5-1935 is het adres Garijp 129. Daarvoor nummer 356 en 387. Folkert vertrekt op 26-5-1930 naar Oudega. Aukje vertrekt op 14-11-1922 naar Nijega en Sijtske op 13-5 1932 naar Drachten. Kadaster: Hij pacht in 1909 een huis met bouwland van de pastorie in Garijp, van de Nederduitse Hervormde Gemeente. Hij is dan koemelker. In 1935 woont hij in het huis van zijn broer Sytze, die het in 1935 verkocht aan Jan. (De Tuije 14/ Garijp 129). Sytze was failliet verklaard en het huis moest verkocht worden. In 1963 vraagt de heer Kooistra uit Siegerswolde een verbouwing aan voor f. 7000,-

In 1939 is er een kostganger in huis: Tjeerd Huitema, voor een maand. Later nog een kostganger van 7-4-1945 tot 2-4-1946. In 1936 woont er ook een boerenknecht voor een paar maanden: Albert van der Veen.

Vanf 1919 kocht hij hooi- en rietland en verkoopt vanaf 1937 delen daarvan.
