Er werd lange tijd aangenomen dat Eduard leed aan Spierdistrofie. Later werd een betere diagnose gesteld, nadat meer kennis was verworven en na hetoverlijden van een familielid met dezelfde ziekteverschijnselen. Op basis daarvan kan worden gesteld dat Eduard leed aan de erfelijke ziekte AtaxiaTelangiectasia. Door deze ziekte was hij lichamelijk gehandicapt en overleed hij op jonge leeftijd.
