Newspapers are an important resource for genealogy and family history research as they contain obituaries and other vital record substitutes such as birth, marriage, and death notices. Family members may also be mentioned in articles reporting on local news, events, and social activities. Many articles found here provide details on historical events that are unlikely to exist in any other record. Coverage and completeness in this collection varies by title.

Civil registration-the recording of births, marriages, and deaths by civil authorities-was officially instituted in the Netherlands on 1 March 1811. However, in some areas of the Netherlands civil records were kept as early as 1795. Please see the archive list below for locality coverage. The majority of the records date between 1811 and 1965, though the extent of year coverage can vary by locality.(br/)(br/)

AGE: 66
By edict issued by Napoleon in August 1811 every male head of the household had to register a permanent Family name or surname. There was a register for this. So Johnnes Meinerts adopted the family name of Beintema on this date and declared and signed such at the Mairie in Oudwoude, Buitenpost, Leeuwarden, Vriesland.
Background information see:(http://langenberg-laagland.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=76)
His two surviving children, Lijsbeth, aged thirtyfive and Douwes aged thirtytwo years are listed as well on the registration. This must mean that they also adopted the surname Beintema from this date forward.
