Notes about Jodocus Hondius - Joost de Hondt

Joost / Jodocus DE HON(D)T / HONDIUS, graffeur,kartograaf, uitgever,drukker en boekverkoper, geboren op 14-10-1563 te Wakken West-Vlaanderen, overleden op 16-02-1612 te Amsterdam op 48-jarige leeftijd, hij overleed "door een grote verkoudenisse". Als kind van acht jaar vertrok Jodocus met zijn ouders van Wakken naar Gent, waar Jodocus het tekenen, graveren in koper en het snijden in been machtig werd. Hij had een wetenschappelijke aanleg op het terrein van
wiskunde, geografie, en sterrenkunde. Hij combineerde dit met artistieke vaardigheid en zakelijk talent. Zelfs de Hertog van Parma plaatste opdrachten en stelde hem een studiereis naar Rome in het vooruitzicht.
Maar vader Olivier was remonstrants en voelde daar weinig voor.Hij liet Jodocus wel Latijn en Grieks studeren. Toen Jodocus 20 was viel Gent voor de legers van de Hertog van Parma (Philips II) en vluchtten ze naar Londen.
Daar bekwaamde hij zich in de kartografie en maakte hij een Wereldkaart en verlatijnste zij naam in HONDIUS..
In 1593 vestigde hij zich in Amsterdam en verbeterde de Mercator Atlas.
De Mercator Hondius Atlas verscheen in 21 oplagen en in 1607 verscheen een
zakatlas. Hij kocht een pand in de Klaverstraat op 31-12-1605 van Claes Symons van HEEMSKERCK. oud-schepen van Amsterdam van waaruit de zaken werden gedaan.

Zoon van Olivier DE HONDT en Petronella D´HAVERTUYN

Gehuwd op 23-jarige leeftijd op 11-04-1587 te Londen met Colletta van der KEERE.

Uit dit huwelijk met Colletta werden in totaal 7 zoons en 6 dochters geboren, waarvan er in 1633 nog 2 dochters en 4 zoons in leven waren. Na zijn dood in februari 1612 werd de zaak voortgezet door zijn weduwe en zoons Jodocus II en Henricus.

Jodocus is bijgezet in de Nieuwezijds Kapel op het Rokin te Amsterdam.
