    J'ai donc complété la notice de Prosper Baudrie. Elle est insatisfaisante (je n'ai pour l'instant trouvé aucun élément sur ses engagements professionnels et sociaux en France), mais j'espère qu'un autre chercheur aura plus de chance.

    BAUDRIE Prosper, Liévin
    Né le 9 août 1820 à Gand (Belgique) ; mort le 15 mars 1900 à Bruxelle (Belgique) ; relieur ; communard, officier de la Garde nationale.
    Fils de Prosper Baudry et Marie Augustine Josephe Le Terre, Prosper Baudrie, sujet belge, était relieur.
    Il vécut à Bruxelles à partir de 1845 puis à Paris à partir de 1865 ou 1868 (au 3, rue des Canettes puis 19 rue Gozlin, VIe arr.).
    Pendant la Commune de Paris, Baudrie fut élu sergent le 29 mars 1871 puis lieutenant le 14 avril 1971 dans la 6e compagnie du 193e bataillon fédéré.
    Il réussit probablement à rejoindre la Belgique, et s’installa à Bruxelles.
    Le 19e conseil de guerre du gouvernement français le condamna par contumace, le 2 décembre 1872, à la déportation dans une enceinte fortifiée, peine remise en 1879 sous condition d’expulsion. Voir F. Zingé.
    Baudrie a épousé Pauline Stevens le 30 avril 1845 à Bruxelles. Le couple eut au moins un fils Henri Theophile Baudrie (1854-1917), également relieur.

Notes about Prosper Livien Baudrie

Eugène Varlin is Commandant van de 193° bataillon Fédere te Parijs 6°, dit is de 8° sector Montparnasse onder leiding van Admiraal Mequet, 93 Avenue D'Orleans.

Prosper Livien is Luitenant in deze eenheid.
Zij recruteerden mannen van af 21 jaar tot 40 jaar.
Samengesteld op 29 september 1870 - jan 1871.
Later bevinden zij zich op 18 maart 1871 Place Vendôme.
Le 26 mars Nommé commission.
Il est Sergeant elu le 29 mars, et Luitenant elu le 14 avril.

Et les quartiers dits « bourgeois » ? On verra plus loin que les Ier, IIe, VIIIe, VIe et VIIe, qu'on dit si volontiers indifférents, se sont prononcés plus nettement qu'on ne le croyait pour le gouvernement. Ce que je note brièvement, c'est qu'on y vit quelques velléités d'assister le Comité central. Une petite fraction du 92e, du IIe, une également, et plus importante du 106e, du VIIe, tentèrent dès le matin de se porter sur Montmartre, mais sans doute n'allèrent pas bien loin. En revanche, le 228e, de la partie nord du IXe, y était. Le 193e bataillon (autrefois commandé par Varlin) s'est réuni, mais a été « dissuadé par son commandant » d'intervenir.

En travaillant de façon un peu précise sur les textes écrits par Eugène Varlin, j’ai appris que cette « journée » avait été à l’origine de sa révocation comme commandant du 193e bataillon de la garde nationale. Pourtant, beaucoup d’auteurs, à commencer par Adolphe Clémence dans un bel article sur Eugène Varlin de 1885, font une confusion entre cette journée et celle du 31 octobre.

Depuis le 17 septembre, la ville est assiégée, enfermée dans ses fortifications avec le gouvernement « de défense nationale ». Ce gouvernement est formé de ceux qui ont occupé les lieux du pouvoir après la journée du 4 septembre, il y a tout juste un mois. Il a donc peu de légitimité. Et il ne « défend » pas grand chose.

La nouveauté, c’est que les Parisiens sont maintenant organisés (plus ou moins) dans des bataillons de la garde nationale. Parmi les bataillons nouvellement formés, il y a le 193e, dans le sixième arrondissement, dont Eugène Varlin a été élu commandant. Je n’ai trouvé ni la date exacte de formation du bataillon (vers la mi-septembre : les journaux datés du 15 septembre font état de seulement cent trente-huit bataillons, le 25 septembre j’ai vu mention du 208e), ni celle de l’élection du commandant. Beaucoup de révolutionnaires se font élire à la tête de leurs bataillons. Nous verrons Eugène Varlin lui-même expliquer leurs motivations dans une lettre du 19 octobre, que l’on trouvera dans un des articles suivants.
