    De familietak welke is onderzocht, vindt zijn oorsprong omstreeks 1699 in Tzummarum (Barradeel) –ten noordwesten van Franeker- waar voorvader Cornelis Liuwes woonde en alwaar zijn zoon Albert Lieuwes is geboren. Deze verhuisde naar Lutkelollum -tenzuidwesten van Franeker- en trouwde aldaar met Sjouckjen Jans.
    Hun kinderen werden in eerste instantie voornamelijk vernoemd naar hun vader; van Cornelis Liuwes naar Albert Lieuwes en vervolgens naar Joannes Albertsz (Alderts). In 1816, bij het huwelijk van kinderen van Joannes Albertsz (Alderts), komt de naamHaersma resp. Haarsma in beeld. In die periode is de familie verhuisd inmiddels van Franeker (noord-west Friesland) naar Weststellingwerf (zuid-oost Friesland).
    Het is in 1892 dat voorvader Albert Haarsma een meisje uit Sloten (Amsterdam) trouwt en zich als smid in Amersfoort vestigde.
