    CORNELIS CORNELISSEN HERTOCH was net als zijn vader landbouwer. Aanvankelijk woonde ook hij onder Roosendaal, maar tussen 1648 en 1652 verhuisde hij naar Steenpaal. Deze buurtschap ligt aan weerszijden van de huidige rijksgrens tussen Nederland en België en wel juist waar de gemeenten Essen, Rucphen en Roosendaal samenkomen. Men sprak destijds van een Steenpaal onder Essen en van een Steenpaal onder Wouw. Woonhuijs ende koije van Cornelis stonden op Steenpaal onder Wouw in de heerlijkheid Langendijk. Langendijk was een klein, driehoekig gebied, dat voor de eigenaar, de markies van Bergen op Zoom, uit Wouw werd bestuurd. Naderhand is de Langendijk opgegaan in de gemeente Rucphen. Evenals zijn vader vinden we Cornelis Hertoch regelmatig vermeld bij de aan- en verkoop van land.39
    Zijn meest opvallende aankopen deed hij in 1659 en 1674. Op 27 maart 1659 kocht hij voor ƒ 1637:10:0 een block nieuw ingenomen heijlant, gelegen op Langdonck, maar liefst 12 gemeten 38 roeden groot. Op 10 oktober 1674 verscheen Cornelis voor schepenen van Essen en Kalmthout en kocht hij voor ƒ 635 van Stoffel Janssen een stedeken lants mette huijsinghe daerop staende, groot omtrent thien gemeten, onbegrepen der mate, sijnde soo lant, weijde als heijde onder Essen op Overda. Vijf jaar na deze aankoop stierf
    Cornelis op Steenpaal en moest zijn nalatenschap verdeeld worden. Dat had nogal wat voeten in aarde, gezien de bijzondere ligging van Steenpaal. De kinderen deelden de goederen voor schepenen van Wouw op 13 december 1679, voor schepenen van Roosendaal op 26 oktober 1691 en ten slotte voor schepenen van Essen en Kalmthout op 24 januari 1696.40 Ter gelegenheid van de eerste deling, te Wouw, kreeg de landmeter Michielsen de opdracht de landerijen van Cornelis te Steenpaal in kaart te brengen. Die perceelkaart wordt nog altijd bewaard in het Wouwse archief. Daarop valt duidelijk te zien dat Cornelis land bezat zowel onder Essen als onder Roosendaal en onder Wouw-Langendijk. In totaal werd bij de drie delingen 79 gemeten 11 roeden land (ongeveer 34 hectare) gedeeld. De have en roerende goederen van Cornelis werden in 1679 bij opbod verkocht, zoals blijkt uit een rekening van 1684. Cornelis Cornelissen Hertoch werd te Roosendaal gedoopt op 6 december 1609 en te Nispen-Essen (Steenpaal) begraven op 27 september 1679. Hij trouwde te Roosendaal op 5 mei 1643 met Maria Baltens Kerstens, gedoopt te Nispen-Essen op 25 augustus 1624 als dochter van Balthasar Kerstens (Christiani) en Adriana Martens. Maria werd begraven te Nispen-Essen op 16 november 1677. Cornelis en Maria hadden in totaal elf kinderen gekregen: zeven zonen en vier dochters. Vijf van die zonen huwden en kregen nakomelingen. Van de zonen Balthasar, Merten en Cornelis leven nu nog, voornamelijk in België, afstammelingen, die de naam Hertog(h)s dragen. Het nageslacht in mannelijke lijn van de zonen Adriaan en Matthijs stierf al snel uit.
