    De eerste sporen van de familie, waarvan de huidige afstammelingen in Nederland en België zich Hertoghs, Hertogs of Herthogs noemen, dateren van het einde van de zestiende eeuw onder Roosendaal. Een tak van deze familie handhaafde zich te Roosendaal tot 1802, terwijl andere takken zich verspreidden in de loop van de tijd over het zuidwestkwartier van het markizaat van Bergen op Zoom (Huijbergen, Ossendrecht, Woensdrecht) en vooral over de gehele Antwerpse Noorderkempen (Essen, Kalmthout, Wuustwezel en Brecht)

    Over de herkomst van de stamvader valt op dit moment niets met zekerheid te zeggen. Wellicht moeten we zijn oorsprong zoeken onder Wouw. Daartreffen we in 1578 in het cijnsboek van de markies van Bergenop Zoom een Jan Cornelis Hertoch aan en een Lenaert Cornelis Hertoch
