    Willem volgde in 1061 zijn vader op als graaf van Toulouse, markgraaf van de Provence en hertog van Narbonne. In 1064 erfde hij van zijn nicht Agde, Béziers, de stad Narbonne, Rouergue en Uzès. Na een conflict met zijn broer Raymond stond hij delen van Toulouse en Rouergue aan hem af, maar kon wel Agen, Astarac en de Périgord inlijven. In 1094 droeg hij het bestuur van het graafschap over aan zijn broer en trok naar Aragón, waar hij sneuvelde in de strijd tegen de Moren bij Huesca.
