Johannes Bais was een van de tien nakomelingen uit het huwelijk vanPieter bais(1834-1927)en Jantje over de Linden (1837-1907).Het gezinverhuisde in
1880 van Enkhuizen naar Den Helder.Of het echtpaar kennis had genomenvan het
feit dat de jutterij in een economische crisisperiode verkeerde alsgevolg van de komst van het Noordzeekanaal is onbekend.Zeker zal hetgezin Bais spoedig op
de hoogte zijn gesteld dat de lokale visserij een geduchte veer moestlaten nu
het concurerende IJmuiden,dankzij haar rechtstreekse waterwegverbindingmet
Amsterdam,Den Helder als visserijgemeente van de eerste plaats hadverdrongen.
Johannes Bais treedt in de voetsporen van zijn vader en deed op jeugdige leeftijd ervaring op in het "harde" visserijbestaan.Rond 1913 gaf hij scheepswerf bok opdracht tot de bouw van de botter H.D.210.
Dit houtgepende vaartuig was uitgerust met een 2-cylinder motor 60 pk enkon bij motorstoring met behulp van de z.g. "fok"en het "grootzeil"dereis vervolgen.De drie koppen tellende bemanning bestond uit forsgebouwde kerels
die over een enorme kracht moesten beschikken,daar het ophalen vannetten nog niet machinaal geschiedde.Veel gelegenheid de kooijen op tezoeken was er niet,
daar de gebroeders bais om de twee uur een nieuwe lading spartelende visnaar boord moesten trekken en doen opslaan.Begrijpelijk dat onder devissers na terugkeer weinig animo bestond voor een weekend ontspanning.

Van sociale wetgeving was in die tijd evenmin sprake.Als door zwarestorm de bemanning aan wal bleef verviel tevens de bron van inkomsten enkonden de vissers zich nimmer beroepen op een uitkering.Men moest detering naar de nering zetten en een soort reservepot aanleggen.Hetaanspreken van zo'n spaarpot kwam overigens buiten noodweer zeldenvoor.Zo was bijvoorbeeld "ziekteverzuim”nder het varend personeelnauwelijks denkbaar.Een huisarts bracht slechts een bezoek innoodgeval.De meest voorkomende kwalen-waar een gemiddelde werknemertegenwoordig een arts bij raadpleegt-bestreed zeevisser Bais meteenvoudige geneesmiddelen zoals Haarlemmerolie of kaasvet.
Toch was Johannes Bais omstreeks 1922 genoodzaakt door ernstige infectieaan het gelaat het werk definitief te beeindigen.Tegen deze huidziektehadden de
toenmalige medici geen geneesmiddelen voorhanden.Inmiddels hebben zijnoudste zoons Freek en Pieter op de H.D.210 en op de te Urk gebouwdeH.D.112.
Laatsgenoemde botter had een ronde achtersteven en een 1-cylinder 40pk-motor.
Na het afstand doen vn beide schepen belegde Johannes het geld inhuizen,zodat het ouder wordende echtpaar niet afhankelijk was van hetarmbestuur.
Johannes Bais overleed in juni 1945 op een evacuatie-adres te Urk.
Vermeldenswaard is dat ook zijn broersAdrianus(1867-1929),Thomas(1865-1914),Dirk(1870- ),Hendrik(1871-1961)en
Frederik(1900-1977) beroepsvissers waren,die hiermee de traditie vanPieter
Bais voortzetten.
