Jan , Mia en hun kinderen woonden in de Nieuwstraat in Amstenrade bij de moeder van zijn Mia die ziekelijk was. Mia heeft haar gedurende 34 jaar liefdevol verzorgd.
Jan werkte als mijnwerker op de Staatsmijn Emma in Hoensbroek. Als gevolg van silicose en stoflongen moest hij vroegtijdig stoppen en werd
medisch afgekeurd. De laatse jaren van zijn leven waren lichamelijk erg zwaar voor hem. Jan was een bedreven musicus en speelde saxofoon. Hij was lid van
het Emma Korps in Hoensbroek. Vanaf zijn 14e speelde hij al in mee in de harmonie van Doenrade. Mia Baggen-Leunissen woont in een bejaardenflat adres: de Gijselaar 4f te Amstenrade.( Interview op15-11-2006 ). Jan was ook een duivensport liefhebber.
