In 1958 schrijft Adriaan Morriën in het Parool: "Portegies Zwart schrijft een bedachtzame poëzie, een verskunst vol voorbehoud, overleg en door het verstand gecontroleerde bewustwording. Zijn poëzie is een poging om ruimte te brengen in een werelddie door gevoelens van eenzaamheid twijfel en besluiteloosheid wordt benauwd." Dit was een reactie op zijn debuutbundel 'Oogopslag en eindsekonde' uit 1957. Zwart maakte carrière in de reclame als copywriter en was bedenker van het woord "okselfris". Recente bundels zijn 'Betrekkingen' (1998) en 'Krullen van jezelf' (2001).
