    He was a trusted official of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, until his disgrace in February 828. He was an ambassador to Constantinople in 811. In 824, he took part in an expedition in Brittany and, in 826, he accompanied the Empress Judith to the baptism of Harald Klak in Ingelheim. In 827 he was one of the officials in charge of repelling a Muslim invasion led by Abu Marwan. He delayed until the threat was passed, and lost his favor at court. He was deposed in February 828. He rebelled, lost and had his lands in Gaul confiscated. However, he remained influential in Italy, where Lothair created him Duke of Locate.

    Moriarty accepts his descent from Eticho, but says the early history of that family is in great confusion. The sources, he says, give a long pedigree from Eticho but offer no valid proof. Chaume suggests that he might have been son of Hugh, princeps in Burgundy. Other sources suggest that his father was Haicho, an Etichonid.

    Hugh of Tours

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Hugh or Hugo (c.780 – 20 October 837) was the count of Tours and Sens during the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, until his disgrace in February 828. He was probably a son of Count Haicho of the House of the Etichonen.

    Hugh had many possessions in Alsace, including the Sens. He also held the convent of St-Julien-d'Auxerre. He appeared in 811 as an envoy or ambasciator to Constantinople with Haido, Bishop of Basel, and Aio, Duke of Friuli, to renew the Pax Nicephori. In 821, he allied himself by marriage to the royal family; his daughter Ermengard married Louis' son Lothair. In 824, he took part in an expedition in Brittany and, in 826, he accompanied the Empress Judith to the baptism of Harald Klak in Ingelheim. His other daughter, Adelaide married Conrad I, Count of Auxerre.

    In 827, Hugh, along with Matfrid of Orléans, was commissioned by Louis to recruit an army with his son Pepin of Aquitaine and repel the invasion of the Marca Hispanica by the Moslem general Abu Marwan. Hugh and Matfrid delayed until the threat had passed. For this he was given the nickname Timidus or the Timid. Barcelona being the greatest military accomplishment of Louis' career, the Spanish March meant much to him and Hugh and Matfrid found themselves greatly disfavoured at court. They were deposed in February of the next year.

    He remained very influential as the father-in-law of Lothair. He joined Matfrid in inciting Lothair to rebellion and had all his lands confiscated in Gaul. He remained highly influential in Italy, where Lothair created him "duke of Locate" (dux de Locate).

    Wikipedia:

    Er hatte zunächst vor allem im Elsass Besitz, war dann unter Kaiser Ludwig dem Frommen auch Graf von Tours und vermutlich auch Graf von Sens, und damit im Besitz zweier der wichtigsten Grafschaften des Frankenreichs. Darüber hinaus war er Vogt des Frauenklosters St-Julien-d’Auxerre.

    811 war er einer der kaiserlichen Gesandten Karls des Großen in Konstantinopel. 821 heiratete seine Tochter Irmingard Karls Enkel, den späteren Kaiser Lothar I. Seine Bedeutung erschließt sich auch dadurch, dass er 824 im Reichenauer Verbrüderungsbuch als erster Graf aufgeführt wird. Im gleichen Jahr nahm er an einen Feldzug gegen die Bretonen teil. 826 waren er und Graf Matfried von Orléans die Begleiter der Kaiserin Judith bei der Taufe des Dänenkönigs Harald Klak in Ingelheim.

    827 führte er das fränkische Entsatzheer auf dem Feldzug gegen die Mauren im Raum Barcelona. Da sein zögerndes Vorgehen (ihm wurde der Beiname „timidus“, der Ängstliche, gegeben) das zu späte Eintreffen dieses Heers mit verschuldete, wurde er 828 auf einem Hoftag in Aachen – ebenso wie Matfried von Orléans – abgesetzt, blieb aber von großem Einfluss in der Umgebung seines Schwiegersohnes Lothar I., den er sogar gegen seinen Vater Ludwig aufgewiegelt haben soll. Nach dem Verlust seiner Güter und Ämter in Gallien trat er, weiterhin in der Gunst Lothars, als einer der wichtigsten fränkischen Adligen in Italien auf, wird sogar nach einem Königsgut, das ihm übereignet wurde, „dux de Locate“ – gemeint ist Locate di Triulzi bei Mailand – genannt.

    Hugo und seine Frau Ava († um 840) hatten mindestens fünf Kinder:

    * Irmingard (* um 805, † 20. März 851) 8 821 Lothar I., König von Lotharingien
    * Adelais (Adelheid) († nach 866) 8 I Konrad I. Graf im Argen- und Linzgau († 863) (Welfen), 8 II Robert der Tapfere (X 866) Graf von Paris (Robertiner)
    * Liutfrid I. (* um 800/805, † 865/866) Graf von Tours, Laienabt von Münster-Granfelden 8 NN
    * Bertha (* um 805, † nach 870), 8 819 Gerhard II. (* 800, † 878/879) Graf von Paris, Graf (dux) von Vienne (* 800, † 878/879) (Matfriede)

    Hugo von Tours (* um 780; † 20. Oktober 837) war vermutlich ein Sohn des Grafen Haicho aus dem Haus der Etichonen und damit ein Ururenkel des Herzogs Eticho von Elsass; sicher ist, dass er ein Nachkomme Etichos war. Der Zweig der Familie, an dessen Spitze er steht, wird Liutfriden genannt.

    Er hatte zunächst vor allem im Elsass Besitz, war dann unter Kaiser Ludwig dem Frommen auch Graf von Tours und vermutlich auch Graf von Sens, und damit im Besitz zweier der wichtigsten Grafschaften des Frankenreichs. Darüber hinaus war er Vogt des Frauenklosters St-Julien-d’Auxerre.

    811 war er einer der kaiserlichen Gesandten Karls des Großen in Konstantinopel. 821 heiratete seine Tochter Irmingard Karls Enkel, den späteren Kaiser Lothar I. Seine Bedeutung erschließt sich auch dadurch, dass er 824 im Reichenauer Verbrüderungsbuch als erster Graf aufgeführt wird. Im gleichen Jahr nahm er an einen Feldzug gegen die Bretonen teil. 826 waren er und Graf Matfried von Orléans die Begleiter der Kaiserin Judith bei der Taufe des Dänenkönigs Harald Klak in Ingelheim.

    827 führte er das fränkische Entsatzheer auf dem Feldzug gegen die Mauren im Raum Barcelona. Da sein zögerndes Vorgehen (ihm wurde der Beiname „timidus“, der Ängstliche, gegeben) das zu späte Eintreffen dieses Heers mit verschuldete, wurde er 828 auf einem Hoftag in Aachen – ebenso wie Matfried von Orléans – abgesetzt, blieb aber von großem Einfluss in der Umgebung seines Schwiegersohnes Lothar I., den er sogar gegen seinen Vater Ludwig aufgewiegelt haben soll. Nach dem Verlust seiner Güter und Ämter in Gallien trat er, weiterhin in der Gunst Lothars, als einer der wichtigsten fränkischen Adligen in Italien auf, wird sogar nach einem Königsgut, das ihm übereignet wurde, „dux de Locate“ – gemeint ist Locate di Triulzi bei Mailand – genannt.
