Notes about Kendall Edward Hopkins

Biography:

John was born in Auckland, New Zealand, (Greenlane Hospital) on 18 November 1954. My mother was (Joy) Gladys Joyce Hopkins, my father's second marriage, after his first wife ran of with on of my Dad's much younger siblings. My Dad was the oldest of 12 kids! My parents were married 29th June, 1953 in Auckland. She was born in Napier, 29th June 1917. Her mother died soon after childbirth and my mother was adopted twice! My Dad was born 18 Feb. 1908, in Auckland (Devonport?).

I have one sister, Adele Joy Hopkins, born 15 May 1957, who married David Arthur from Newcastle, Australia, and have two children, Jason and Timothy who live in Murwillumbah, . Currently she and her husband live and work in Shenzhen City, just over the water from Hong Kong. They have been there for a decade or so. David teach Economic and runs career advising at a exclusive private High School that regularly gets its students into places like Cambridge, Oxford, Berkley, UCLA, Harvard, etc.!

Until 1977 I grew up in Auckland, (Remuera & Mount Eden) and after High School was an architectural draftsman. In 1977 I moved to Newcastle University, New South Wales, Australia where I studied architecture, graduating with a B.Sc.(Arch.) with merit, and a B.Arch. (First Class Honors). I worked in Sydney after graduation. In 1982 I married my wife, Karen Fay Shears, in Timaru, New Zealand, 20 June, 1982, and I took up a 1-2 year Visiting Professorship at Andrews University in Michigan. They wanted me to stay and got me a "Green Card" permanent residency. We are still here after 29 years!

In 1989 I took leave of absence and studied for my post-professional M.Arch. for a year and a half. Returning to Andrews University I taught there till 1994. after that I did a short stint teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana, and doing consulting work. Then in 1995 I completed one year in first completing a feasibility plan for Judson University, Elgin, Illinois (on the western edge of Chicago 30 miles out), then a detailed implementation plan including student and faculty recruitment and the detail design of the curriculum. After shepherding the department through its first National Architectural Accreditation, I return to work in Michigan. Deteriorating health meant that I could only work part time. More recently I have been able to work because of chronic daily Migraines (every morning).

My wife is the owner of Portrait wedding studio here in Berrien Springs. We have two children, Kendall Blair HOPKINS, born St. Joseph's Hospital, Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA, on 1 Aug. 1988. Klara Stafford HOPKINS was born at Lakeland Hospital on 16 Sept. 1991. Kendall has just finished a B.S. double major in Computer Programming and Mathematics with a minor in Electrical Engineering at Andrews University in our home town. This July 30, 2011 He married Britney Bell, in The Center Meeting House Chapel in Niles Michigan. There now live in Bloomington Indiana where she is completing a two year Masters in Speech Pathology.

Klara has just begun her second year in Medical Lab Tech Science at Andrews University (in there with all the Pre-med, Pre-Dentistry, Physical Therapy, etc. students!). But she is hanging in there. She lives at home with a 2 minute commute to University. Klara is also a talented photographer and helps her mother during the summer and at weddings. She has been shooting wedding since she was about 13! and is Very Very good.
