Lawyer, politician, U.S. attorney general. Served in the Kentucky House 1847-1848 and Kentucky Senate 1861-1863. He was a proponent of slave emancipation, pushing unsuccessfully to include it in state's 1850 constitution. In 1861, he was appointed commander of the Louisville Home Guard. Selected by President Abraham Lincoln to serve as U.S. Attorney General 1864 - 1866
