Notes about William Terrell Speed

John Speed--VA

John Speed was born Feb. 5, 1713/14 in Southwark Parish, Surrey County, Virginia. He was the son of James and Mary (Pulley) Speed. He lived most of his life in Mecklenburg Co., VA. On Oct. 6, 1737, he was married to a widow named Mary (Minetry) Taylor. Their children were:
1. John, born Aug. 3, 1738, who married Sarah Baird.
2. James, who was born Mar. 4, 1740.
3. Henry, who was born Mar. 28, 1742.
4. Sarah, born Feb. 14, 1743, who married a Hansard.
5. Lewis, born Jan. 25, 1745, who married Elizabeth Mason.
6. Martha, born Aug. 11, 1748, who married an Apperson.
7. Joseph, who was born May 27, 1750.
8. Lucy, born April 11, 1752, who married William Jeter.
9. Mathias, who was born June 18, 1754.
10. A son, born 1756, who died very young.
11. Mary, who also died young.
John Speed was a man of faith and belonged to the Episcopal Church. He built a church known as "Speed's Church." He was a vestryman in Bishop Meade's parish church also. He has been described in books as a "man of large wealth" and "a man of considerable fortune." He died on March 8, 1785, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. His wife, Mary, died July 1, 1782. They were both buried on their farm at Mecklenburg in the family burying ground. At the time of his death, his estate was divided among nine children.
He was a Patriot during the Revolutionary War. He supplied beef, wheat, corn, and other food for the soldiers. He also provided fodder and pasturage for twenty-eight horses. He was appointed Chairman of the Committee of Safety in 1775 and was called a "Gentleman Justice" after that date. Four of his sons are known to have served in the Rev. War. They were John, James, Lewis, and Mathias. Lewis died from his wounds. Also wounded was James, but he recovered.
