Notes about Hugo Langpaap

~~1~~ Lauretta Klockars, his grand daughter, stated "he lived with his family at 19th and Clement in San Francisco, until 1915, when they moved to Kentfield, Marin County."isco to newly married German immigrants from distant parts of Germany, Hugo became a resident of Tombstone, Arizona at about 1 year of age. His parents were attracted to stories of fortunes made in the new mines developed there after Ed Schefflin discovered gold in a place people said was "the only thing you'll find there, Ed, is your tombstone". The young Langpaap couple tried mining, but bought 1/2 interest in a cattle ranch in the Sulfur Springs Valley at the foot of the Chiracajua Mountains about 30 miles east of Tombstone. The ranching business failed due primarily to a prolonged drought in south east Arizona which began at about the time the Langpaap's purchased their share of the ranch. Their cattle didn't thrive and those that survived were often rustled by native American cattle rustlers as well as Mexican bandits and American citizens as well. They were so near the bodrer with Mexico that cattle were moved acoss freely in both directions, and ownership was fragile. The Langpaap's divested themselves of their share of the ranch, and moved back to town, where Carl, Hugo's father, was employed as a miner and eventually became a dynamite techician as well. Hugo attended School and eventually learned the printing trade while working at the Tombstone Prospector, one of two newspapers in town. He became a typesetter and eventually a printer. After the family returned to San Francisco when Hugo was about 23, he obtained work easily in one of the cities newspapers and did that work until his death.e, their mother had learned to play the piano well in childhood, and had a nice upright piano at home when the family moved to San Francisco in 1903. It is not known whether they had one in Tombstone. Hugo's voice was particularly fine, and he was well enough trained that he became a member of the chorus of the San Francisco Opera Company while living in San Francisco. It is worth remembering that on the evening before the great earthquake and fire on April 18, 1906, Henrico Caruso sang in the opera house in San Francisco. Whether a chorus participated or not, I can't be certain, but if it did, Hugo might have been singing in support of Caruso. When the earthquake struck at about 5AM, Caruso was esconced in one of SF's great hotels and was frightened out of this mind. He left the city immediately and never returned.t to purchase a home in Kentfield in 1915. I understand that the house is no longer standing.
