Notes about Willem Mezach

Zoals reeds bij Coenraad is verhaald (zie notitie Coenraad), konden de broers Coenraad en Willem goed met elkaar opschieten en gingen vaak met elkaar uit. Op een van hun uitgaansavonden troffen de broers de zusjes Deuring uit Ter-Apel. Willem kon het goed vinden met Hillegien en het duurdedan ook niet lang dat Willem en Hillegien in het huwelijksbootjes stapten. Ze trouwden op dinsdag 7 augustus 1906 en gingen wonen en werken opde boerderij van vader Mezach in de 2e Exloërmond.
In het najaar van 1911 kreeg Willem een ongeluk.Hij was van een wipkar, die getrokken werd door een op hol geslagen paard, afgesprongen. Daarbijis hij erg ongelukkig tegen de leuning van n watertrap langs het kanaal terecht gekomen. Hij kreeg in volle vaart die leuning in zijn buik.Na het ongeluk is er kennelijk weinig aandacht geschonken aan het letsel, maar na verloop van tijd werd de pijn steeds heviger en hij liet zichopnemen in het RK ziekenhuis te Groningen. De inwendige kneuzingen en bloedingen zijn hem noodlottig geworden. Op 27 februari 1912 is hij overleden. Hij is begraven vanuit het huis van zijn vader Mezach Mezach te Stadskanaal.
Hillegien bleef met de zorg voor haar drie kinderen achter. Ze voelde zich erg ongelukkig alleen in het, toen nog kale land van de 2e Mond. Een maand na het overlijden van haar man vertrok ze dan ook met haar 3 kinderen naar haar ouders in Ter-Apel. Na een kleine verbouwing kon ze inwoning krijgen op de boerderij. Zwager Hendrik uit Stadskanaal werd toeziendvoogd over haar kinderen. Ondanks de steun van de familie viel het niet mee een boerderij op, voor die tijd, grote afstand te beheren. Zo werd dan ook besloten om de boerderij in de 2e Exloërmond te ruilen met de boerderij van zwager Coenraad in Ter-Apel. In 1921 kreeg de ruil van de boerderijen van Hillegien en zwager Coenraad zijn beslag. Zo kreeg het gezin van Coendraad de boerderij van opa Mezach Mezach en Hillegien de boerderij van vader Deuring, die ze later in eigendom kreeg. Op 55 jarige leeftijd toen haar jongens zelfstandig waren en de huwbare leeftijd hadden bereikt, vertrok zij naar Siddeburen waar zij een burgerwoning had laten bouwen naast haar dochter Harmina aan de Hoofdweg.
