    Na de inval van de Duitsers in Rusland op 21 juni 1941 werden in Nederland veel communisten gearresteerd en in kampen opgesloten.

    Willem bracht het clan clandestiene communistische blad "De Waarheid" rond. Hij kreeg een oproep om zich op 22 juni 1941 te melden bij de Siecherheits Dienst in de Euterpestraat (nu de Jan van Veenstraat) te Amsterdam. Hij werd daar direct vastgehouden en vandaar naar het tijdelijke kamp in Bergen aan Zee (Kamp Schoorl) overgebracht. Vandaar naar het concentratiekamp Amersfoort, vandaar naar het concentratiekamp Vucht en tijdens de jaarwisseling 1941/1942 op transportgesteld naar het concentratiekamp Neuengamme (Hamburg) in Duitsland, alwaar hij het Nr. 6888 kreeg en aldaar is overleden.
