Page 197 No. 391 "The State of Ohio, Richland County This 14th day of December A.D. 1855, personally came Jarvis Cullen and says that Peter Hider is twenty one years of Age, and that Chalotte [sic] Cullen is under eighteen years of age,and a resident of this county; that both said last named persons are unmarried, and that there is no legal impediment to their being joined in marriage. Jarmis (his X mark) Cullen Subscribed ['and sworn' marked out] to before me the dayand year named. Attest. G Rouley W.A. Moore Dept. Clk probate Judge of Richland Co."

"No. 391 Return filed, December 19th A.D. 1855 The State of Ohio, Richland County, I do hereby certify that on the 16th day of December A.D. 1855 I joined in Matrimony Mr. Peter Hider and Miss Charlotte Cullen Rev. D. Summers."

The will of Charlotte's father, William Cullen, left her a ward of Jarvis Cullen. Jarvis must have had an aversion to making oaths. The clerk tried to accomodate him by crossing out words and rephrasing the statement. Items in brackets are supplied by David A. Navorska. Does the 'X' mean Jarvis was illiterate or does it mean the original document was marked with his seal that could not be duplicated?

It could also mean that Garvis signed nothing but only stated the information verbally. The clerk may have supplied the 'x.'

cf. James 5:12 "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."

1855 12 14 + 1 (It could have been the day before her 18th birthday.) 1855 12 15 -18 ---------- 1837 12 15

Charlotte could have been born as early as 15 Dec 1837 and as late as 1 Mar. 1840 when William mentions his infant daughter in his will. Dorothy Cawthorn has a photograph of Peter & Charlotte Hider
