Robert was single and a conductor for the Toledo Light Company. He was the son of Christopher and Mary E. Switzer Alwood with siblings: Etha, Charlie, Edgar, Lesta, and William. In 1900, the family was in Steuben County, Indiana, where his father was an insurance agent. Robert was of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks.
