Irvin W. Onken was born on December 8, 1922, on a farm in Nobles County, Minnesota to John and Margaret Finke Onken. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Following his discharge, he returned to the family farm. On February 2, 1951, he and Gladys Funk were married at Reading, Minnesota. They farmed east of Avoca, Minnesota and raised their family there. Irvin and his brothers did custom farm work for many years. They moved into Fulda, Minnesota in 1978 and continued farming until his retirement in 1993. Irvin passed away at Our House in Slayton, Minnesota on June 24, 1998, at the age of 75. Hewas a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Avoca. He served on the FHA Board and was a life member of the Avoca American Legion. Irvin enjoyed trading cars, farm machinery, playing cards, pool, hunting, and spending time with his familyand many friends. He loved working with cattle and farming was his life.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Fulda, MN; three daughters and their husbands: Alexis and John Fransen, f Iona MN; Debra and Tony Manzella, Veroqua, WI and Lori and Ron Holinka of Avoca, MN; six grandchildren: Jessica and NicoleManzella, Colton and Halee Fransen, and Tessa and Gabriele Holinka; two brothers and their wives: Edward and Millie Onken, and Arnie and Sylvia Onken, all of Slayton, MN, and a sister, Joan Janke of Fulda, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son Jon.

Funeral services were held at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Avoca, MN on Friday, June 26, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev Joy Armstrong officiating. The organist was Sherri Isder. The soloist was Donna Getzel. The pallbearerswere Allen Onken, Jody Onken, Lane Onken, Denis Janke, Colton Fransen, Lyndon Funk and Jeff [Funk?]_Interment at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Avoca, MN."
