The memorial service for Arnold "Arnie" Kelzer, 67, of Bath, SD, will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Aberdeen, with Military Honors by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post 24 and Andover American Legion Post 258. Arnie died Sunday, May 10, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
Arnold "Arnie" Anton Kelzer was born March 7, 1948 to Edward and Viola (Bruns) Kelzer in Willow Lake, SD. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Willow Lake High School in 1966. Arnie joined the United States Army on March 14, 1968. He served honorably in Vietnam and received many medals including the Army Commendation Medal and two Bronze Star Medals for heroism in ground combat. Following his honorable discharge, Arnie returned to Willow Lake. He started a career with Burlington Northern Railroad, which led him to live in Watertown and later Aberdeen.
Arnie married Betty Sauerwein on October 22, 1988 in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home in Aberdeen until moving to Bath in 1989. Arnie retired from the railroad on April 8, 2008.
Arnie was a member of the Andover American Legion Post 258. He enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels and the Aberdeen Humane Society. He also liked to garden at the Aberdeen Community Gardens. In his younger years, Arnie enjoyed snowmobiling and riding his motorcycle. He took many trips throughout the United States and Canada. Arnie loved hunting and fishing. He was able to go on two pheasant hunting trips last fall and a fishing trip to Devil's Lake this spring with the Wounded Warriors Project.
Grateful for having shared Arnie's life are his wife: Betty; four children: Barbara, Raymond, Ron and Randy; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister: Arlene Brower and three nieces.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Viola, and his brother-in-law, Jerry Brower.
