George A. Paxton Jr., 74, of 839 N. West St., Carlisle, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 at Holy Spirit Hospital, East Pennsboro Township. Born March 25, 1923 in Carlisle, the son of the late George A. Sr. and Ruth Brown Paxton, he retiredafter 31 years of service with Iron Workers Union Local 404. Along with the union, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Woodhouse Hunting Club, VFW Post 477, Eagles Aerie 1299 and the former Drum and bugle Corps of the AmericanLegion Post 101, all of Carlisle.

Mr. Paxton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Company C 645 Tank Destroyer Battalion, with the rank of sergeant. He won the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars andone Bronze Arrowhead. He is survived by his wife of 51, years, Stella M. Lebo Paxton; two sons, George W. and David A., both of Carlisle; two daughters, Cathy A. Fetter of Carlisle and Susan A. Wadsworth of Mt. Holly Springs; two sisters,Betty Husler and Janet Jakubowski, both of Carlisle; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlislewith the Rev. Jon A. Black officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, North Middleton Township. Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to First PresbyterianChurch, 2A N Hanover St., Carlisle, PA 17013 or the American Cancer Society, 1500 N. 2nd St., Harrisburg, PA 17102-2527.
