Brief Life History

only married once, to William Haye, and died as the widow, Joane Haye in 1591, so remained a widow and never remarried according to will of Sir Nicholas Tufton, he had 3 daughters named Joane who all lived to adulthood and married, it appears wrong merges have occurred, [of course] Inquisition post mortem of Nicholas Tufton, Esq., taken at Horsham, Sussex, 27 Dec 31 Hen. VIII [1539] (Inquisitions Post Mortem, Sussex, Exchequer series, TNA, E 150/1089/4). Also see the will of Nicholas Tufton of Northiam, 2 Jan 1537/8, proved 1 Feb 1538/9, Prerogative Court of Canterbury, reg. wills, TNA, PROB 11/27/410, online image (ancestry.com).

NOTE: It is clear from Nicholas's inquisition post mortem that he was the father of three living daughters named Joan

BIRTH: Joan Haye, widow, is identified as a daughter in the inquisition post mortem of Nicholas Tufton, esq., taken at Horsham, Sussex, 27 Dec 31 Hen. VIII [1539] (Inquisitions Post Mortem, Sussex, Exchequer series, TNA, E 150/1089/4). Joan and her daughters (not named) are also mentioned in the will of her father, Nicholas Tufton, 2 Jan 1537/8, proved 1 Feb 1538/9, Prerogative Court of Canterbury, reg. wills, TNA, PROB 11/27/410, online image (ancestry.com). Year of birth is a rough estimate based on the age of her eldest son.

MAR: The inquisition post mortem and will of Nicholas Tufton, cited above, shows that his daughter Joan was married to a Haye, but it does not name Joan's husband. A wife Joan is identified in the inquisition post mortem of William Haye held at Robertsbridge (parish of Salehurst), Sussex, 17 Oct 34 Hen. VIII [1542], abstracted in F. W. T. Attree, ed., Notes of Post Mortem Inquisitions Taken in Sussex. 1 Henry VII to 1649 and After, Sussex Record Society, vol. 14 (London, 1912), 118. The wife of William "Hey" of Robertsbridge was identified as a daughter of "_____ Tufton of Nordiam [Northiam]" in W. Bruce Bannerman, ed., The Visitations of the County of Sussex Made and Taken in the Years 1530… and 1633-4, Publications of the Harleian Society, visitation series, vol. 53
(London, 1905), 167."
