Brief Life History
BIRTH: William is identified as a son of John Haye of Robertsbridge (parish of Salehurst) in William Berry, County Genealogies. Pedigrees of the Families of the County of Sussex (London: Sherwood, Gilbert & Piper, 1830), 118. Surveys of the Manor of Robertsbridge taken in 1567-70 confirm that the heirs of John Haye held freehold obtained from the abbott and convent of Robertsbridge by a deed dated 14 Mar 14 Edw. IV [1474/5] (R. H. D'Elboux, ed., Surveys of the Manors of Robertsbridge, Sussex, and Michelmarsh, Hampshire, and of the Demense Lands of Halden in Rolvenden, Kent 1567-1570, Publications of the Sussex Record Society, 47 [1946]:9-10). John's sons were apparently the William and John Hay who were assessed in the 1524-25 lay subside of Robertsbridge (Julian Cornwall, ed., The Lay Subsidy Rolls for the County of Sussex, 1524-25 [Lewes: Sussex Record Society, 1956], 151-52).
MAR: The inquisition post mortem of Nicholas Tufton, esq., taken at Horsham, Sussex, 27 Dec 1539, calls Joan Haye, widow, his daughter (Inquisitions Post Mortem, Sussex, Exchequer series, TNA, E 150/1089/4). A wife Joan was said to be the mother of William's children, is identified in his inquisition post mortem, held at Robertsbridge (parish of Salehurst), Sussex, 17 Oct 34 Hen. VIII [1542], abstracted in F. W. T. Attree, ed., Notes of Post Mortem Inquisitions Taken in Sussex. 1 Henry VII to 1649 and After, Sussex Record Society, vol. 14 (London, 1912), 118. The wife of William "Hey" of Robertsbridge was identified as a daughter of "_____ Tufton of Nordiam [Northiam]" in W. Bruce Bannerman, ed., The Visitations of the County of Sussex Made and Taken in the Years 1530 and 1633-4, Publications of the Harleian Society, visitation series, vol. 53 (London, 1905), 167.
DEATH: Inquisition post mortem of William Haye, yeoman, Attree, Notes of Post Mortem Inquisitions Taken in Sussex, 118.
