Brief Life History
George Duisman, Former Mayor, Dies Suddenly

George Duisman, former mayor of Dike, died suddenly at his home Saturday forenoon. He had been at work in the school bus shop. He felt illness coming on and phoned the superintendent of the schools that he was not feeling well and that he was going home. After he reached home a doctor was called from Reinbeck. After the doctor had given a complete examination he was suddenly stricken with a heart attack and death came very shortly. He was 60 years old.

George Duisman came to Dike 33 years ago and lived here continually ever since. He was born in Aplington December 18, 1898. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sebo Duisman. Later the family moved to Parkersburg. For several years George was a mechanic in a garage at Parkersburg until he came to Dike. After coming here he took a position as a mechanic in the Herman Nielsen Chevrolet garage. He served there for 18 years after which he entered into partnership with Luke Marks. The two were engaged in the farm machinery business here for 10 years when they sold out to the Walterman Implement Company. The past four years George was employed as a mechanic by the Dike Community School to maintain the school buses which he kept in excellent repair all of the time.

Was Mayor 8 Years

George Duisman took an active part in community activities during the years that he lived here. He was a member of the town council for six years and for eight years he was the town's mayor. He also served as a member of Dike's volunteer fire department. He was a good man, a good citizen and a faithful supporter of all that was good for his town and his community. His death is deeply regretted by his many friends.

George Duisman and Tena Mitchell were married October 3, 1936. The couple had no children.

Mr. Duisman became a member of the Dike Methodist church in 1939 and for the past ten years he had been a member of the official board.

Funeral services were at the Methodist church at Dike Saturday afternoon. The service was conducted by the resident pastor, Rev. Harry Gleim. Burial was in the cemetery at Dike.

Survivors are the wife, three sisters and one brother. The sisters are Mrs. Herman Nielsen, Dike, Mrs. Harmina Guest, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Heiko Smith, Rochester, Minn.; one brother Joe from Petaluma, Calif.

--The Grundy Register (Grundy Center, Iowa), 14 May 1959, pg 12"

It is my hypothesis that the marriage at Nashua IA most likely means the wedding took place at the Little Brown Church located in a township outside Nashua. It is a popular destination-wedding spot. The church is made popular by the the song, "O Come to the Church in the Wildwood".-D.A. Navorska-iiii June MMXXIV-in proximo Grove OK.
