"Death Strikes Former Pastor

Funeral services will be held at Howell-Edwards Chapel Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock for The Rev. Wilhelm N. Sjovangen, 83, who died in a Salem hospital Friday. Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Sjovangen, who at one time was an interm minister at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Silverton, was a late resident of 1000 North Capitol St.

Born April 21, 1874, in Norway, Sjovangen came to the United States when 21 years of age and settled in Illinois. He worked for several years on farms in Iowa before beginning his studies at St. Olaf's College in Northfield, Minn. Later he attended the Lutheran seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained as a minister in 1910.

From 1910 until 1914 Sjovangen was a minister at a Lutheran Church in Marmon, N.D., and later he served at a church in DeSmet, S.D. The Rev. Sjovangen retired in 1917 and came to Oregon to reside in 1919. He had made his home in Salem since 1937 and occasionally had delived a sermon at the Central Lutheran Church where he was a member.

Surviving are his widow, the former Elsie Henderson in whom he was married in 1909 in Northfield, Minn.; a daugher, Miss Valborg Sjoyangen, Salem; sons, Harold Sjovangen, Portland, Ralph Sjovangen, Sonoma, Calif., and James Sjovangen, San Francisco; and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Bjelland in Iowa."
