He was (1) mustard gassed during World War I and (2) he was the last surviving member of the Last Man's Club of the Rainbow Division and could never open the bottle of Champagne like he was suppose to. When America entered World War I, the "Rainbow" Division was sent to the front. For the duration of the war, the regiment was never out of firing range of the enemy; he saw action in the A.E.F. battles of Champagne, the Second Battle of the Marne, St. Mihial, Argonnem, Lorraine and Nlurse Argourne. (Kendall Young Library, Webster City, Iowa has information on him in "Scrapbook - World War I, Pages 7, 8, 14, 18, 151, 69 and 171)
