Theodore "Ted" Stubbe, age 97, of Aplington, Iowa, was born on a farm between Aplington and Ackley on November 22, 1919, to Henry and Nancy (Janssen) Stubbe. The family moved two miles east to the family farm when Ted was two. Ted went to Austinville School for eight years and then graduated in 1937 from Aplington High School where he played basketball and ran track. But his favorite sport was baseball. After high school, he continued playing baseball for area town teams.

After high school, Ted worked for area farmers and the Austinville Elevator. He was drafted into the Army on September 10, 1942. He served as a radio tower man in the Army Air Corp 71st Squadron in the China-Burma-India theater. He was honorable discharged on December 31, 1945.

On September 25, 1946, Ted was united in marriage to Frances Miller in the parsonage of the Bethel Reformed Church, rural Aplington. They moved to the Stubbe farm and started farming. On October 10, 1949, Ted lost his fingers in a corn picker accident and spent a month in the hospital. In September, 1955, they had a farm sale and in March, 1956, they moved to Aplington and Ted started working for Butler-Grundy Farm Service, eventually becoming store manager.

Throughout his life, Ted overcame his handicap. He became a successful Pioneer Seed Corn salesman and was elected to serve as Butler County Supervisor for sixteen years. His accident forced him to stop playing town team baseball but he adjusted by becoming a respected baseball and softball umpire and watching as many games on television as possible. His favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the A-P Falcons. He never missed the Saturday morning 'Coaches Corner' radio program.

Ted was very active in AMVET Post #102, Commercial Club, and Lions Club. He and Frances were members of the Aplington Presbyterian Church where Ted served as Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and Church Treasurer. His favorite pastimes were family Christmas gatherings and watching and supporting his children and grandchildren playing sports.

Ted died Monday, August 21, 2017, under Hospice care at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Frances on 11/19/2011; his parents; three sisters, Cora Stubbe, Tarana Geerdes, and Elizabeth Penning; and two brothers, Christie and LaVerne.

Ted is survived by three daughters, Peggy (Dale) Rogers of Janesville, Patty Uhlenhopp of Aplington, and Pamela (Kent) Gulick of Allison; a son, Paul Stubbe of Aplington; three grandsons, Christopher (Sarah) Maifield of Bettendorf, Jonathan (Jessica) Maifield of Ankeny, and Levi (Nicole) Gulick of Janesville; two granddaughters, Brooke (Mike) Hillegas of Allison and Mackenzie Uhlenhopp of Aplington; and four great-grandchildren, Brody Wangsness, Thomas Maifield, twins, Lennon and Leyton Gulick and another expected at the end of November.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
