Ben S. Mechaelsen, 86, longtime Kamrar resident, died at 10:57 Monday evening [August 4, 1952] at the Memorial hospital in Story City. He had suffered a heart attack Saturday afternoon at his home in Kamrar and taken Monday morning to the hospital.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Presbyterian church east of Kamrar, preceded by a service at 1 p.m. at the family home in Kamrar.

The Rev. August Cramer and the Rev. R. Richards will officiate with burial in the Presbyterian church east of Kamrar.

Benjamin S. Mechaelsen, son of Seafka and Bertha Mechaelsen, was born July 20, 1866 in Petkum, Germany. He was five years old when he came with his parents to the United States. The family lived for a short time in Ackley, then moved to a farm near Kamrar where Mr. Mechaelsen was reared and educated.

He was united in marriage March 20, 1890 to Grace Olthoff and they started housekeeping on a farm three miles northeast of Kamrar. They farmed in that vicinity until the fall of 1931, when they retired and moved into Kamrar, their home since.

Mr. Mechaelsen was preceded in death by his wife who died Oct. 30, 1940; by one daughter, Louise, who died May 26, 1931; one granddaughter, Helen Welp; his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by three sons and three daughters: Seafka, Joe and Oliver Mechaelson [en] and Mrs. E. D. (Bertha) Welp and Mrs. Hilko (Ella) Jans, all of Kamrar, and Mrs. Richard (Esther) Mortenson of Jewell; 25 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Peter Mechaelsen of Kamrar, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mechaelsen was baptized in the Presbyterian faith and was a member of the Presbyterian church at Kamrar.

A man of sterling character and of a generous nature, he was widely respected in the Kamrar community where he had many close friends and acquaintances during his long residence in that area.
