"SMITH, RALPH - MAE VEENKER

Ralph was the son of Dick and Anna Geerdes Smith and he married Mae, who was the daughter of Ralph and Fannie Casjens Veenker. After a few years in George, the family moved to the Johnson farm south of town where Ralph had grown up and continued farming until they retired to town. Their son, Jerry, then started farming the place.

Ralph was proud of the horses he used to farm and enjoyed buying and selling them.

As their family grew, Mae didn't always have time to bake bread so Ralph went to town every day"

Jerry Smith was born December 4, 1937 at George, IA the son of Ralph and Mae (Veenker) Smith. Jerry grew up on a farm south of George, IA where he attended George Community School. After his graduation in 1956 Jerry worked on the family farm. Jerry served his country in the United States Army as a crew chief for the Army Aviation Corp from 1960-1962 with a tour of service in Vietnam. Upon his discharge Jerry worked in Denver, CO. He was united in marriage to Elvie (Stubbe) Smith on May 28, 1966 at Hope Reformed Church at George. They made their home on the family farm near George. Jerry was a farmer through and through. He loved spending time out on the farm with his dad, his brothers, and his sons. In his younger years he enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing cards with his friends. Summers spent at their camper at the lakes were fun and relaxing times for him. One of his lesser-known talents was writing poetry. His grandchildren were the greatest joy of his life. He loved spending time with them, especially giving them rides on the tractor or in the combine. Later in life he enjoyed having them give him rides in his golf cart. Jerry was a past REC Director, member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church where he served as a past Elder and Trustee, and was also a Farmer's Elevator board member. For the past few years he was a resident of the George Good Samaritan Society. On April 13, 2018, Jerry died at the age of 80 at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.

He is survived by his wife, Elvie Smith of George; son, Mark (Lesli) Smith of George, IA; daughter, Michelle (Ed) Ver Steeg of Spencer, IA; 6 grandchildren, Breanna and Brayden Smith, Abbie, Emma, Ashten, and Evan Ver Steeg; siblings, Ronald (Bonnie) Smith of George, IA; Audrey (Norman) Grooters of Vancouver, WA and Carol (Judson) Schrick of Decorah, IA.
