Hessel was born the son of Gerrit & Tillie Feenstra De Jong near Orange City, Iowa. He was raised and educated near Orange City. He married Anna Lamfers on April 14, 1938, in her parents' home near George. They lived and farmed near Sheldon, Spencer and Doon, Iowa until January 1948, when they bought a farm near Rock Rapids. In addition to farming, Hessel operated a trucking business for many years. In 1980 they moved from the farm to a house north of Rock Rapids until June of 2008, when they moved to Premier Estates Assisted Living in Rock Rapids.

Hessel enjoyed singing church music, especially gospel. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Hessel passed away at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Funeral services were held from the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, Rev. Paul Fischer officiating.

Hessel & Anna were the parents of Beverly Klaassen, Lois Willemssen, Janice Schneidermann, Nancy Lodes, Linda Rasmussen, Audrey Lundy, Karen Walker, Harold De Jong, and Greg De Jong.

Hessel's siblings include Jennie Engelkes, Louisa Jacobsma, Tillie Rook, Gerrit Jr. De Jong, Arnold De Jong, Richard De Jong, Frank De Jong, Jake De Jong, Tradie Platinga, Trena Mouw, Gert Zwikker, and Effie Faber.
