Perle Hoffmann was born in Iowa in 1893, one of 3 children of Anna (Kemling) and Louis Hoffman. Perle's mother died when Perle's younger brother was only 7 years old, so she and her older sister Mary (May) helped raise and care for their young brother.

Perle married Byron Bangs, and they raised their family in the Dows, Iowa area. Byron died in 1945 at age 55. Perle lived another 20 years after the loss of her husband.
