She was born in Dows, Iowa to Byron D. and Perle Hoffman Bangs.

She married Royal Whitman on Sept. 4, 1938. He died April 2, 1982.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara (Doug) Freed and Linda (John) Brown, both of Lexington and Janice (Robert) Michael, Towanda; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
