Funeral services for Eldon I. Aden, age 80, of Lake Norden, SD, and formerly of Milbank, South Shore, Watertown, Aberdeen, and Sisseton, SD, were held at 10:30 a.m. in the American Lutheran Church in Milbank, SD, on Thursday, October 7, 2004. The Reverend Ronald C. Brugger of Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD, officiated. Eldon died on Monday, October 4, 2004, in Beverly Healthcare in Lake Norden, SD. The organist was LaVona Van de Voort and the soloist was Deb Rausch. Visitation was at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank, SD, on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Thursday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren: Alisa Grismer, Hilary Aden, Christopher Gesler, and Andrew Gesler and his great-granddaughter, Hailey Gesler. Active pallbearers were Keith Aden, Doug Aden, Dwight Dockter, Neil Meister, Bill Bork, and Steve Selgeby. Burial was in the Milbank City Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by the Grant County VFW Post #3486 and the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9, Milbank, SD.

Eldon was born on March 25, 1924, near Milbank, SD, the son of Dell and Hilke (Tjaden) Aden. He was baptized on October 12, 1927, and confirmed on June 2, 1940, in the Milbank Evangelical Lutheran Church. Eldon attended Grant Center #6 country school through the eighth grade.

He was a WW II veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army from March 16, 1945, until his honorable discharge on Dec. 16, 1946. Eldon received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), the Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal. He attained the rank of sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Delores E. Erickson on September 22, 1948, in Milbank, SD. Follow-ing marriage, the couple farmed near South Shore, SD, from 1948-1963. They resided in Watertown, SD, from 1963-1966 and in Aberdeen, SD, from 1966-1976. Eldon was in the meat cutting business from 1963-1974.

In 1976, they moved to Sisseton, SD, where Eldon owned and operated an apartment house. He was admitted to the Alzheimer's unit at the Lake Norden Care Center in Lake Norden, SD, on May 15, 2001.

Eldon was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD. He was also a past member of the Otto Quande Renville American Legion Post #50, Sisseton, and the Ft. Sisseton VFW Post # 3342, of which he was a past commander (1988-89).
Eldon loved to hunt, fish, and metal detect. He loved to visit and joke with people over a cup of coffee. Eldon also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife Delores, Watertown, SD; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Fran Aden, Pierre, SD; one daughter, Diana L. Aden, Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren, Alisa Grismer, Hilary Aden, Christopher Gesler, and Andrew Gesler; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Gesler; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Darreld and Norma and Jim and Evelyn, all of Milbank, SD, and Reuben and Evelyn, White Bear Lake, MN; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Lowell Dockter, South Shore, SD, and Loretta and Donald Meister, Burlington, WI; sisters-in-law, Carol Aden, Milbank, SD, and Eunice Aden, Stillman Valley, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn and Henry Aden; and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Aden.

The Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank was in charge of the arrangements.
