John William Gerdes married Rosina Fischer in Hampton, Franklin Co., Iowa in 1876. They had 3 sons..
1. William Gerdes born Sept. 1876. I am not sure of his death date. He was married twice and had many children. His first wife died in 1918 in the Spanish flu epidemic. Also lost two children in 1912 during tornado in Noble County Oklahoma.

2. Fred Herman Gerdes born 26 April 1878 died 17 Jan 1945 in Coffeyville, Kansas. Buried at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Married Catherine Josephine Thele in 1906. My grandfather was their oldest child. They had 11 children survive to adulthood.

3. John Henry Gerdes born Feb 1880. I know almost nothing about him.

All 3 boys were born in Iowa. Rosina Fischer Gerdes died in Feb 1880 according to the 1880 census Mortality schedule, of burns. A family story says the two older boys were playing and knocked over an oil lamp. So it would seem that this story is true since she died of burns.
